This is truly awful

Reader Stephanie sent me this lovely photo of some poor kids's school lunch. I believe this is post-Jamie. What's that cow pat doing there?

  1. God almighty that's awful, someone call social services or is the child who looks about 5 or 6 in a Young offenders unit and for what eating a MacDo?

  2. I was pre Jamie and that really is disgusting. I would've turned my nose up at that 5 years ago. Christ.. I think that's at the bad end though. My siblings get decent meals.

  4. are you sure this isn't a picture of what the poor little kiddie vomited up after eating his lunch?? That's just so cruel - how hard is it to make a chicken and salad sandwich??

  5. Now that is really gross. The plate is kind of cool though.
I hope you didn't try and eat any of that...

  6. I didn't see that 'food'. The photo was sent to me by a lovely lady from London who campaigns for better food.

This is why my children have all had packed lunches from home and a proper meal in the evenings!
The whole idea of a meal being served on a plastic tray like that is repulsive to me. i wouldnt want to eat it at all.
My daughter has never had a school meal as she is coeliac and there is no reqirement for education to cater for her. She has a fab lunch from home. Much nicer than that! She has peppers, cucumber, carrot sticks, cheese, grapes, yoghurt, juice or smoothie, and occassionaly a sneaky packet of crisps!!! All packed in her lunch bag with an ice block to keep things fresh!

The muck on that tray is enough to start a food fight! LOL!

  10. I'm going to try to identify this stuff. I can see two new potatoes, baked beans, sweetcorn and that other lump could be something battered. As for the cow pat... that must be chocolate pudding. The idea of eating from an orange plastic tray is too awful to contemplate.

This is really very awful.I can't believe that kids get this kind of food which is not at all healthy. This is very insensitive and disgusting.

  12. How can you destroy beans in that way? This looks so totally revolting and unhealthy. It makes me realise that school dinners in my day were gourmet food by comparison.

  13. hi TM just had to mention to The Nurse (the mummy) that her comment "The muck on that tray is enough to start a food fight! LOL" made me laugh because my son has free school meals, last friday my son who is small for his age and quiet was getting hassle from the school bully who was calling him names, the last comment the bully said to my son before dinner(if you can call it that) was that he wouldnt fight back because he was gay,as they sat down to dinner the bully threw a chicken nugget at my son so my son picked up his dinner the bullys dinner and threw them over the bully as the bully got up to walk off he threw both drinks over him the bully then started to run off so my son picked up his chair and threw that at him too, as you can imagine trying to keep a straight face when the head teachers telling me my son had a food fight and scared the bully half to death is not easy, but hes not picked on him since and the other children in the school think my sons dead cool.

  14. Oh dear God.

    It's all been said above.

    I am speechless.

mini, I am so proud of your son! Standing up to bullies is not easy but to do it in such a wonderful way is fabulous! With any luck your son will never need to show his strength again! Well done him!

Did the teachers find it amusing, off the record of course?

  16. Mini, well done your son! And what did you say to the head?! I hope they where well aware of the suffering of your poor lad and why he acted this way, or was he punished!!

TM that dinner is soo wrong in many ways, and pray ofsted was informed and all has changed! School dinners can be just as bad as NHS dinners but I am thankfull to know my lad is getting a health meal each day, only because I sneak into the kitchen most days and have a school dinner from them myself, ohh the joys of working on a school site :-D

  17. Im thinking the thing between the spuds and sweetcorn is pizza...

I work in a school and that looks like school Pizza to me... Awful!

  18. Eating off those plastic prison trays is truly gross.Everyday I used to witness staff splashing gravy or veg into the pudding. Using a knife and fork is difficult too.

We demanded that The London Borough of Merton bought a proper plate for every child. That was the easy bit - persuading some schools to use them was harder.

Of course the real challenge is improving what goes on the plate. You can see pics of yesterdays Merton school dinner on my blog - jackiesschooldinnerblog

  19. Those trays are awful. Children should eat of a proper plate with a proper knife and fork. I know the food tray simplifies things - but we're bringing up a whole generation of kids who know nothing about table manners (let alone the fact they are expected to eat that goop). And I would think that cross-contamination is rife - bit of choc cow pat on the main course etc. Yuk Yuk Yuk!!

  20. Cannot remember if I mentioned this survey to you yet or not, about a year ago someone compared prison food against hospital food using about dozen points of comparison and prison food ended up winning. No way could that school lunch be better than what you've been eating. Poor kid, I wouldn't feed that to my dog.

  21. And they wonder why kids go to the chippie for lunch !

  22. @The nurse(the mummy) strangley enough they didn't find it amusing but the other parents at the school did lol,@ Anonymous the head did say that the bully was in the wrong and that my son should of told a teacher personaly i thought my sons way was a lot better, the only punishment he recieved was having to get another dinner which is obviously punishment enough.

  25. I must say that I am glad they dont do school dinners in Aus. Or the schools that do are Private and you pay enough money to get a real meal..... Give me my vegemite sandwhich, apple and frozen popper (juice box) any day!!!!! In fact I still pack myself that now and then to take to work!

  26. Agent, you just recited my teenager's school lunch for today. Vegemite sandwich, apple, popper, chocolate chip biscuits for morning tea (it's Friday). Sometime grapes or watermelon. I guess as there is not a culture of "school dinners" in Aus that I just don't get parents who send their kids off to school without a packed lunch.

  27. Poor children. Is that cow dung? I hope not.

  28. I bet you anything you like this is a case of Elfin Safety strikes again. Think how dangerous a plate, knife, fork and spoon could be, in the wrong hands! And children might choke on anything other than gloop.

  29. No wonder so many children are hyper these days. Having their food served on these plastic unhygynic trays is indeed demoralising, I wouldn`t put food out for a stray animal using one of these disgusting trays.
