New chef?

Okay, so I think I'm being given extra rations of meat to the meals photograph better. This was relatively tasty and even the peas were a cut above the usual green bullets.

A fruit crumble with custard that was tasty enough for me to finish it. Now what on earth is going on? Am I know fully institutionalised or is my blog actually making a difference?

  1. No it's ok I can still see the blood round the rim of your crumble bowl. The main has me confused I might even have managed to try that myself but why the peas?????

  2. Love the way they never manage to get the food on the plate properly at the first attempt. There are always bits smeared where they shouldn't be! How hard can it be to get the food into the middle of the plate first time round?

  3. they must be trying to impress you before the hairy bikers turn up lol

  4. @Lulu: I thought I was the only one noticing this - good to know someone else thinks it's a poor show that they can't hit the target first time.

  5. I think it depends on how much motor control the food server has. I'll say no more.

  6. Hey that custard looks distinctly better. Not all watery and pus-like. I'm reserving judgment, however, as I can't help but feel that Stockholm Syndrome is never too far away from a man in your predicament.

If I'm wrong and the food was genuinely tasty, with good nutrition and didn't just trickle down the gullet like sick, then I shall grudgingly concede that things may be looking up.

LOL - perhaps they have now designated one person in the kitchen to be responsible for arranging your meals on the plates and making them look attractive, and perhaps slipping in some extra meat to keep you quiet.

Stay strong and focused, TM. You never know what the next meal is going to be like, although in some ways the randomness of the quality does enliven the day I suppose. "Will it be the bucket of sludge .. or a real meal. Place your bets PLEEEEASE, laydeezangennermen ..."

  7. Dear TM

Despite the best endeavours of Mrs TM and Sam the man, you have succumbed to the "power of the Wall". Why does the custard have a green tinge - because it has been made with the water drained off after boiling the peas for 3 hours.

I am rather worried now ...

    best wishes, Cats' Mother

  8. Hi TM! Pleased to hear you found your food edible - I still have no detailed clue about what it is.
Main: Peas, rice, pieces of big mushrooms and meat that have been solidified in a brownish watery substance, and that watery substance itself.
Dessert: ah you told us what it is. "Fruit crumble" with custard. The custard seems to contain more milk and egg than some others you were served earlier.

  9. The main course was Chicken Chasseur. Now I'm not sure if that translates as 'hunted chicken' or 'chicken hunter'. It could be chicken that's been stalked by a hunter or it could be the flesh of a gamekeeper or chicken farmer.

Whatever, it was, the taste was relatively edible in a synthetic kind of gloopy way; and although I would have sent it back to the kitchen had I ordered it in a restaurant, here it ranks as one of the best slop dishes from the NHS food factory I've eaten so far. However, I must point out that my meat serving is about three times the usual quantity dolled out and I can only imagine that this is to a) genuinely aid my recovery b) make it look good for the blog or c) shut me up.

  10. Mmm. That looks pretty good to me. I hope I haven't developed Stockholm syndrome by proxy.

  11. As far as their intentions are concerned I go for (c) with smatterings of (b).

Resist their charms, TM. Remain vigilant. Actually I feel very sorry for the kitchen staff. It's not their fault the food is so incredibly ghastly. They just have to dish it up.

Perhaps it's a forfeit. If you screw up in the kitchen one day, you're on patient meal dishing-up the next day.

  12. Wow, not bad for the mid week chef. Perhaps he/she is on annual leave this week. The mandatory pea serving doesn't look boiled to within an inch of its life either. Custard no longer looks quite as anaemic (now slighted jaundiced.) Was the crumble topping nice and crunchy? My office colleague had rhubarb crumble from our canteen today and she had to throw it away as it made her feel nauseous.

  13. things do seem to look a little better. did you change your camera or is there better lighting there? meat gravy has a tasty shine to it and the peas look greener! oh and a little tinge of colour in the dessert!

btw, i just bought smoked salmon. maybe its a side effect of reading your posts... hmm... hope you're having a better day and good rest!

  14. This does look a shade more appetising but it's a far from balanced meal. Am I mistaken or is your hospital diet completely devoid of vitamin C? Still, I'm glad it was tastier.

  17. Do NHS managers watch this blog? Just might result in slightly better food.

  18. hmmmmmmmm, looks edible , if you werent in traction and happily married i would wonder if you werent giving the chef a slap and tickle to get better food . and i would like to see if everyone on your ward is getting the same food or if you are the only lucky one .

letrs hope the nhs has seen the error of their ways , but then again , they may just be screwing around with you and tomarrow will be another indescribable mess on your plate .
